Transparency Without A Greenscreen

Programs Needed:
Adobe Premiere 6.5(also works with earlier versions)

Skills Needed:
Filming for a Difference Matte

Description:
In this tutorial you will learn how to use a DIFFERENCE MATTE to remove the background.
This is not an ideal way to remove background, and the following example was done rather poorly. But if you're desperate this will substitute for a greenscreen.

Download Project and Movie Files

STEP ONE: Import the Foreground and Background Footage.

You will need a picture of your scene without you in it to get this to work. If you don't have one click here for a work around.

If your footage looks like this then you need a picture like this

Put mr toad.jpg in video track 1 and put clip.avi in video track 2.

Right click the footage in video 2 and select VIDEO OPTIONS> TRANSPARENCY

In the screen that comes up change KEY TYPE to DIFFERENCE MATTE. Then click on the CHOOSE button circled below.

in the screen that comes up, open MATTE.BMP. Now your sample window should look like this.

Change the settings by clicking the REVERSE KEY check box, dragging the SIMILARITY slider to 14, and setting the SMOOTHING option to high.

Chances are, unless you planned this out really well, your outcome will look like this.

Since this footage wasn't meant for this, it didn't turn out that well. If you plan this out right and read Filming for a Difference Matte, you will get better results.
