Applying Transitions to Titles
Programs Needed: Adobe Premiere 6.5(also works
with earlier versions)
Description: This tutorial
aims to add two transitions to a Title created in the 6.5 Titler and
then use the title to show over a still image, but this could just
as easily be video footage.
|
| STEP ONE: Create your title and drag it to the Video1A
track. | Select your first transition to
introduce the title and drag it to the transition track, here I'm using
the Swing In transition to bring the title onto the screen. Make sure the
direction of the transition goes from B to A Now choose a transition to
use at the end of the title sequence and drag it to the transition track,
I've chose a random blocks transition to clear the title from the screen,
this time the direction of the transition is from A to B Your timeline
window should look something like this
You can preview your sequence so far to make sure the effect
and timing is as required Set the timeline cursor to the left of your
title and use Timeline/Preview or hit the Enter button NB if your Titles are black it will be difficult to see them at
this preview stage, so you may want to create a new colour matte and
position this in Video 1B just to help with viewing the transitions, you
can then delete it before proceeding with the next step To create a
colour matte File/New/Colour matte, pick a colour that will contrast with
your title and save the matte then add it to V 1B.
Once you are happy with the result we need to make a virtual
clip Select the Block Select tool from the cursor options on the
Timeline Window, circled in red below and then position the cursor at the
left edge of the title, left click and holding the mouse button down drag
to the right edge of the clip and release, you should now find the cursor
has changed as per the clip below.
Now drag the cursor to the right, positioning and releasing in Track
V2 and a virtual clip is created Change the cursor back to the standard
arrow. We now need to add to Video Track1A the still image or video
clip that we want to appear below our title, here I have chosen to extend
the image for a few seconds each side of the title sequence, giving time
for the title to first appear then disappear. The virtual clip now
needs to have transparency activated, so open the Video Effect window and
click on transparency set up. These steps are illustrated in the
following image. The transparency set up window
now appears and in this case we need to choose Chroma from the drop down
key type list and set the required chroma colour, move the cursor over the
image shown in the Colour setting box, the image will be black at this
stage ( the first frame of our title before it appears on screen ), the
cursor will turn to an eye drop tool, use this to select the colour to
black, this will fill in the small colour box to the top. The desired
effect can now be viewed in the small sample window at the right by moving
the play button both right and left The project now needs to be
rendered and your title is ready to use. I often export this as a DV avi
movie for use in a separate project but you could now begin to build up
your project clips starting from this virtual clip sequence.
